You May Have Missed...

Google gets a worker council

From Friday, March 20th's episode: Google has agreed to a Worker Council in Europe, in response to a group of 153 Google employees from 11 European offices.   The creation of a work council is required in the EU if enough of a company’s employees in at least two countries file a written request.

Why do we care?

This is a big deal for technology companies who have traditionally not had unions nor worker organization.    The EU is going to be driving this kind of change, and companies with broad international work forces will see this change first.

Teams and Slack updated

From Thursday, March 19th's episode: Teams and Slack both with announcements, which are timely due to the heavy use of products in the current climate.

Slack has unveiled a new design, which includes new sidebar navigation, a new compose button, and a top navigation bar among others.   The intention is to make the product easier to use, particularly with an influx of new users.  The rollout is happening first for new users, and the mobile application is expected to be updated after.

Teams usage is up nearly 40 percent in a week, and Teams is announcing new features, including:

  • Offline and low-bandwidth support for reading and writing messages
  • Allowing chats to be a separate window
  • The ability to raise your hand
  • Real time noise suppression for background noise
  • The addition of the Microsoft Bookings app in Teams for scheduling, managing and conducting virtual appointments.
  • Microsoft 365 Business Voice, which allows the use of Teams as a complete phone system, which is available in the fall.
Why do we care?

The upside of the rapid adoption of remote working is that many organizations who hadn’t used it before will become comfortable with the technology.   While potentially an odd time to roll out new features, they are certainly welcome ones, and so it’s good to know about them as quickly as possible.
CompTIA assumes control of TSP ISAO

From Tuesday, March 17th's episode: CompTIA has assumed control of the Technology Solution Provider Information Sharing and Analysis Organization, announced today at the virtual CompTIA Communities and Councils Forum.

The organization was established with the goal of advancing cybersecurity resiliency in the technology services space.       The organization announced 650 members.

Why do we care?

This organization is the one to watch for the collaboration of small technology services companies, and the vendors who support them.  Announced last October, it has been somewhat quiet since, but I’m hoping with this move to CompTIA it ideally moves into more of a leadership position.
